The first collection by Hedi Slimane for CELINE was no doubt to take a firestorm of criticism, with the designer bringing his own aesthetic to the well established Parisian brand. The first collection presented in Paris during the ongoing Paris Fashion Week was non seasonal. The collection entitled “Journal Nocturne de la Jeunesse Parisienne” explored Slimane’s signature vision of a young Parisian infused with a sentiment of synth-pop. In addition to acquiring the new designer, the revamped fashion house is for the first time taking on a challenge of designing menswear. However all of the menswear pieces in the 96 look collection are considered unisex and available in smaller sizes as well. The runway cast mostly featured new faces who for the first time walk a show of this scale.
For the collection Slimane collaborated with artist Christian Marclay who was in charge of the prints as well as embroidery on the couture pieces coming from Atelier Celine. The music is still integral part of Slimane’s new era as well, for the soundtrack he enlists Marlon Magnée, Sacha Got and model and muse of the designer Grace Hartzel.
The first draft of the track that was to become “runway” was composed by la femme in los angeles in december 2017. Hedi heard the track playing in the background whilst taking photos of Marlon and Sacha at their home in echo park. In January 2018, several days after starting at Celine, Hedi asked La Femme, whom he has been close to for many years, to compose a 20 minute version of the track describing the fashion industry. Grace Hartzel and Marlon Magnee relate the everyday experience of being a model, commenting on the sometimes absurd elements and language used in shows and photoshoots. – from CELINE
