Feng Chen Wang presented Fall Winter 2018/19 collection during the New York Fashion Week. Inspired by the designer’s childhood in Fujian, Southern China and nostalgic memories within the story of ‘The Way Home’, the collection evokes a sense of home and memories of family and friends.
FALL WINTER 2018.19 MENS COLLECTION
There’s no place like home and it’s here, in Feng Chen Wang’s birthplace in Fujian, southern China, where we lay our scene. For Autumn/Winter 2018, Wang looks to her childhood home – number 239, which is embroidered on garments throughout the collection – and takes inspiration from the quotidian; things that evoke a sense of home, or memories of her family and friends. Wang riffs on the ‘boyfriend shirt’, seeing it as a garment imbued in emotion, perhaps the keepsake of a former lover. Meanwhile she renders denim worn, suggesting that it has been just that – worn, perhaps by an older sibling. She employs colour to the same end, selecting a gold like the sun you see on the journey home, and a warm orange like the sun when you finally get there. Details include long and winding strips of cotton tape that twist and turn, much like that journey home often does. While Wang now splits her time between Shanghai, London and New York, it’s clear that she hasn’t forgotten about her home – no, she carries it inside of her. This season Feng Chen Wang continues her partnership with Air Jordan presenting a unique ‘The Way Home’ Air Jordan One. – from Feng Chen Wang
