Australian label Strateas Carlucci presented Resort 2019 collection with the latest lookbook inspired by the work of French Photographer, Writer, and Political Activist Claude Cahun. Exploring the concept of static gender roles, the collection takes the inspiration from Cahun’s self-portrait series and their famous quote “Under this mask, another mask; I will never finish removing all these faces.”
SPRING SUMMER 2019 COLLECTIONS
Playing closely to the concept of gender ambiguity in Cahun’s work, STRATEAS CARLUCCI reinterpret these gender roles in their own unique way, by looking at wardrobe staples and what is perceived as Masculine and Feminine and subtly merging the two. In the masculine tailored forms, soft feminine details are introduced in fabrication and take form in a more tongue in cheek manner, through manipulating garments in the bust area to create wrap bustier looking adaptations. Tailoring remains the hero of the collection, however interesting details give these staples a unique voice. Man pants coupled with silk layers, shirting spliced in colour blocks to quite literally denote varying characters in this story. True to the STRATEAS CARLUCCI brand, conflict concepts are merged to create renditions of classics from the obvious masculine and feminine, to the fabrication of soft and hard. Leather and croc-embossed fabrics are clever nods to Australiana undercurrent of the collection, whilst the minimal and natural colour palate pays homage to the collection title ESTUARY and the Australian landscape. An ESTUARY is a conduit, where like a bridge, it connects the open sea and fresh water with salty ocean water. The clashing of the two opposing forces, creates a unique and harmonious environment. These opposing forces can come in various guises; delicate and rough, concealed and exposed, masculine and feminine – the estuary, the perfect meeting place in the middle. – from Strateas Carlucci
