From sports events and working days to gala dinners and red carpets – Prince William’s wardrobe features a range of key pieces and a variety of different occasions. He did carry out 220 engagements in 2019. With the royal family having a strict dress code (no tiaras before 6 pm) we take a look at the many styles of the Duke of Cambridge.
Working wardrobe
It may not be a traditional working day for the Duke, but he still has a working wardrobe. In most cases, he opts for a slim-cut single-breasted two-button suit, shirt – with or without a tie depending on the event. Again, varying on the occasion, if the engagement is less formal, the Duke of Cambridge will opt for chinos with a tweed blazer. For non-black tie events, blue is the colour of choice with a contrasting tie (maroon if preferable), top button undone for those more casual occasions.
Casual
Even for casual attire, gentlemen are required to wear a blazer with a collared shirt and chinos. It’s very rare to catch a member of the royal family in jeans, however, it does happen. For the Cambridge family’s 2018 Christmas card, the Duke and Duchess both donned denim and casual shirts. William wore a blue checked shirt with the top button undone – proving that casual can be done.
Red carpet ready
Being a member of the royal family, you can expect to receive invitations to the best events around the world. From Hollywood award shows to movie premieres these events tend to be black tie. Prince William’s go-to evening outfit is a single-breasted peak lapel dinner jacket. The Duke will pair this with a simple shirt (usually in crisp white), with a full bowtie.
Sport events
Ray-Ban sunglasses are a firm royal family favourite, with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, Prince Charles and Zara Tindall. When attending sports events, you’re likely to spot them. When at events such as Wimbledon, Prince William will keep in line with the sporting event’s dress code and pair his dark-rimmed glasses with a suit and tie.
Accessories
While his outfits vary depending on what engagement he’s carrying out on behalf of The Queen, one thing has remained consistent in Prince William ’s wardrobe – his watch. He has been spotted wearing the same watch for over a decade: an Omega Seamaster Quartz 300m mid-Size (the luxury watch brand favoured by Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond).
Take a look at this watch design on the Watchmaster website. It’s been seen on many occasions on William’s wrist, as it was also worn for his wedding to the Duchess of Cambridge in 2011. This watch, while it doesn’t have lasers and gadgets like Bond’s, it is rumoured to have sentimental value as it was a gift from his Princess Diana.
