I wanted them all in the show – Jill, Precious, Alva – to send out an important message. Backstage, Precious Lee kissed me and hugged me. When I asked her why, she told me it was because nobody had ever put her on the runway in a short, tight-fitting dress. But I think it’s normal, even necessary. It didn’t even occur to me to cover her up. I wanted to accentuate her femininity, a quality that certainly isn’t the exclusive prerogative of women who are two metres tall and wear a size 38. The aim of Versace is to let women – and men too – feel sensual, powerful and free. Diversity, intended as a plurality of beauty ideals, has to be embraced. And I love the plurality of forms through which female beauty can be expressed. – Donatella Versace
