Luxury house FERRAGAMO unveiled its Resort 2024 collection that explores the generational archetypes of Italian families. Designer Maximilian Davis reinterprets their dress codes from his own unique point of view and gives classic pieces a modern look. He believes that even the clothes worn at home in Italy are luxurious because they are made with such care. This is what inspired his idea of everyday elegance with a hint of luxury.
The collection is an eclectic blend of eras. It features the nipped waists of the 1940s, the glamorous details of the 1980s, and the simplicity of the 1990s. It reflects a lifetime of carefully chosen clothes. Davis explains that he wants to show clothes that will never go out of style as well as heirloom pieces that can be passed down to future generations. There are hints of the brand’s past all over the collection, like the twisted rope detail from a shoe from 1956, the hardware on the handbags that was inspired by a Ferragamo lighter from the 1980s featured in a Christmas catalog, and the quilted silhouettes from a 1999 runway collection. The collection also incorporates the signature elements established by Davis for the brand, like the slash details on the tracksuits and the mid-century couture-inspired silhouettes of the cropped bombers. A touch of fetishistic appeal is introduced within the familial setting through the appearance of high-shine patent boots and sandals, deep-cut necklines, and extremely cropped shorts, subverting traditional norms.
Fabric choices play a crucial role in updating heritage with a modern twist. The lightweight yet structured qualities of natté wool provide tailoring and sportswear with a distinct silhouette, while nubuck suede provides durability and structure. Flocked denim is developed to resemble velvet, providing the appearance of opulence alongside the comfort of a new era. The weight added by double-faced cashmere enables hoods to function as effortless outerwear. Après-ski attire made from recycled polyester or quilted, lacquered nylon embraces functionality. The soft, buttery texture of bonded leathers lends bags a casual elegance as they collapse. Sleek silk satins impart an effortless sense of comfort to eveningwear.
Accessories bring in a variety of modern classics by using graphic lines and geometric shapes to distort symmetry in a precise and elegant way. The slightly sculptural design of a top-flap shoulder bag with lighter hardware emanates a captivating allure, whereas the organic cut-outs on a leather shopper and tote create a hypnotic and instantly recognizable aesthetic. The impeccable craftsmanship of the brand’s atelier is presented in the understated purity of a leather menswear day bag, featuring meticulous bonded construction and minimal hardware that allows for a soft and lightweight form. The contemporary classicism of the Hug purse, which debuted in the Fall Winter 2023 collection, is now presented in earthy tones and tactile fabrics, as well as in a pouch style. An evening purse intricately embroidered with crystals and coral pays homage to Marilyn Monroe’s radiance by presenting a new perspective on contemporary glamour. In addition, the golden rope detailing on a top-handle handbag adds a hint of opulence to clean-cut minimalism.
In footwear, the heritage of Ferragamo is revitalized through the tubular construction of sandals inspired by archival styles from the 1950s. The gently curved heels of stilettos and the pronounced toes of brogues give traditional designs a contemporary twist, encapsulating the new era for Ferragamo.
