London-based fashion house Self-Portrait has announced a fresh collaboration with the celebrated British visual artist, Nick Waplington. Together, with the brand’s latest ambassador, Emily Ratajkowski, they unveil a campaign named “At Home, with Self-Portrait”. The campaign is a reflection of the brand founder, Han Chong‘s cherished childhood memories. It fuses Waplington’s distinctive style with Han’s personal reminiscences of family gatherings, encapsulating the essence of dressing up for an evening indoors. In charge of styling was Emilie Kareh, with art direction from Christopher Simmonds. Beauty is work of hair stylist Shon Ju, and makeup artist Lauren Parsons.
Waplington’s images, spotlighting selections from Self-Portrait’s eveningwear and children’s collections, paint a vivid tableau. They depict young friends, alongside Emily Ratajkowski, captured in spirited instances that echo Han’s treasured memories. Waplington’s artistic genius isn’t new to the global stage. He’s had solo exhibitions at revered institutions such as Tate Britain and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His works are permanent fixtures at major galleries, including New York’s Guggenheim Museum. His forte lies in chronicling the everyday lives of people across all age groups worldwide.
I grew up in a household which took great pride in dressing up for any and every occasion. This has fuelled my work at self- portrait, where we have become the brand of choice for families to wear to celebrations big or small, at home or out.
For this new campaign, I wanted to reflect the wonderful memories I have of seeing strong women celebrate life in all its forms, and I loved the idea of injecting a sense of occasion into the everyday. We knew Nick would be able to translate this spirit perfectly – his eye and aesthetic are unparalleled and I think we have captured Emily at her most comfortable and chameleonic. – Han Chong, self-portrait Founder and Creative Director
The campaign magnificently showcases the latest from Self-Portrait. This includes shimmering gowns from their Resort 2024 collection and cozy knitwear sets designed for children. Emily Ratajkowski’s association with the brand isn’t just limited to this campaign. She recently co-hosted the Self-Portrait Summer Party in July 2023, where she shared the stage with Han Chong and British Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Edward Enninful OBE.
I loved working with Nick – he’s a truly amazing photographer and it was a delight to get into character. Self-Portrait brought together a very special team and I’m thrilled to be a part of their campaign. – Emily Ratajkowski
The newly unveiled collection is a tribute to opulent party dresses and sophisticated outfits perfect for evenings out or hosting events at home. It boasts designs such as a black strapless mini dress adorned with green feather trim, a pink long-sleeve mini dress embellished with rhinestones and feathered cuffs, an olive green gown studded with rhinestones, a silver sequined midi dress with an intriguing twisted neckline, and a black long-sleeve jumpsuit featuring feather cuffs.
Self-portrait Kids resonates with the brand’s overarching theme of empowerment. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s quintessential feminine aesthetics and hallmark features, it aims to inspire young ones globally. Since its inception in 2021, the fashion house designs two seasonal childrenswear collections each year, available in May and November.
