Axiom Space, pioneers behind the first commercial space station, and Italian luxury fashion giant Prada, embark on a revolutionary partnership. The duo has been commissioned to design NASA’s lunar spacesuits for the eagerly anticipated Artemis III mission, set for 2025.
This mission holds special significance as it marks the first crewed lunar expedition since Apollo 17 in 1972. Furthermore, it will spotlight the first female astronaut to step onto the Moon’s surface.
Michael Suffredini, Axiom Space’s CEO, expressed his excitement about the collaboration. He emphasized Prada’s unparalleled expertise in materials and design, predicting that their contribution will enhance astronaut comfort and integrate vital ergonomic considerations.
“We are thrilled to partner with Prada on the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit,” said Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space. “Prada’s technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies instrumental in ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface, but also the much-needed human factors considerations absent from legacy spacesuits.”
Prada’s top engineers will be deeply involved, working closely with the Axiom Space team. Their shared objective? To devise materials and design innovations resilient enough to tackle space and lunar challenges.
Reflecting on Prada’s progressive ethos, Lorenzo Bertelli, the company’s Marketing Director, expressed their pride in contributing to this historic space journey. Bertelli highlighted Prada’s rich legacy of innovation, drawing parallels with their ‘90s Luna Rossa project for the America’s Cup. He envisions this new venture as a testament to human creativity’s boundless potential.
“The constantly forward-thinking ethos of Prada for humanity has broadened to his desire of adventure and to brave new horizons: space,” said Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Marketing Director. “We are honored to be a part of this historic mission with Axiom Space. Our decades of experimentation, cutting-edge technology and design know-how – which started back in the ‘90s with Luna Rossa challenging for the America’s cup – will now be applied to the design of a spacesuit for the Artemis era. It is a true celebration of the power of human creativity and innovation to advance civilization.”
The AxEMU spacesuit, based on this collaboration, promises advanced features tailor-made for lunar exploration. Drawing inspiration from NASA’s previous xEMU design, the new Axiom versions focus on improved flexibility, enhanced durability against harsh environments, and specialized tools for exploration and research. These advancements aim to ensure astronauts can explore the Moon more extensively than before.
The unveiling of these state-of-the-art spacesuits signifies a leap forward in space technology. They’re expected to unlock new facets of lunar exploration, paving the way for deeper insights into our universe.
