STUDIOCANAL and Monumental Pictures have announced the release date for “Back to Black,” a highly anticipated feature film celebrating the life and career of Amy Winehouse. The film is set to premiere on April 12, 2024.

Directed by the acclaimed filmmaker and visual artist Sam Taylor-Johnson, the film stars Marisa Abela, known for her role in “Industry,” in the lead role of Amy Winehouse. She is supported by an impressive cast including BAFTA-winning actor Jack O’Connell, Eddie Marsan, and Golden Globe and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville.
“Back to Black” is penned by Matt Greenhalgh, marking his reunion with Taylor-Johnson following their successful collaboration on “Nowhere Boy” in 2009. The film, featuring many of Winehouse’s hit songs, enjoys the full support of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Publishing, and The Amy Winehouse Estate.
Producers Alison Owen and Debra Hayward of Monumental Pictures, alongside executive producer Nicky Kentish-Barnes, bring this project to life, with Nina Gold leading the casting. Ron Halpern, EVP Global Production, and Joe Naftalin, SVP Global Production, are overseeing the project for STUDIOCANAL.

Sam Taylor-Johnson, known for directing the blockbuster “Fifty Shades of Grey” and the John Lennon biopic “Nowhere Boy,” brings her expertise to this project. Screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh is celebrated for his works “Control,” about Joy Division’s Ian Curtis, and “Nowhere Boy.” He was also BAFTA-nominated for “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool.” The film promises to be a compelling portrayal of one of music’s most beloved and unforgettable icons.
