CHANEL is set to present its much-anticipated 2023/24 Métiers d’art collection in Manchester, bringing a fresh wave of creativity and style. To celebrate this event, Virginie Viard, the creative mind behind CHANEL, has commissioned Sofia Coppola, an acclaimed director and CHANEL ambassador, to create a unique short film in the form of a dynamic collage.
This film is a tribute to the creative spirit of Manchester, blending historic photos of Gabrielle Chanel in Great Britain, a timeless inspiration for the fashion icon, with a rich array of images showcasing Manchester’s influential role in various fields cherished by the House, such as music, literature, architecture, and sports.
Set against the backdrop of New Order’s iconic track “Blue Monday,” the film features a series of color images taken by British photographer Jamie Hawkesworth. In a novel approach, Hawkesworth conducted an “open” casting process to select a group of individuals who perfectly embody the first silhouettes of the collection.
Adding to the anticipation, the film will premiere on Friday 8th December at 9 am Manchester time (10 am Paris time) on chanel.com.
Alongside this, the 2023/24 Métiers d’art collection teaser, titled ‘MCR,’ designed by artist Peter Saville, will also be showcased.
“MCR 8 12 23,” crafted by Peter Saville, a renowned Mancunian graphic designer and the Artistic Director of Manchester since 2004, features the “MCR” logo pulsating to the rhythm of “Bizarre Love Triangle” by New Order. This teaser is an invitation to delve into the world of CHANEL’s show, promising to reveal a fusion of tradition and contemporary flair.
This dual presentation of the teaser and the film on chanel.com offers a unique opportunity to experience the fusion of CHANEL’s elegant heritage with Manchester’s vibrant cultural landscape, marking a new chapter in the luxury fashion world.
