Streaming service Netflix is set to launch an intriguing music docuseries that explores the creation of a global girl group, a collaborative venture between K-pop entertainment giant HYBE and major US record label Geffen Records. This series will offer an unprecedented look into the intensive process of forming a music sensation, modeled after the rigorous K-pop training and development system.
The docuseries will center around KATSEYE, the product of this unique collaboration between Geffen and HYBE. After a global search that attracted over 120,000 submissions, 20 contestants were selected to compete for a place in the group through the TV program “The Debut: Dream Academy.” This journey saw the group being narrowed down from 20 to 10 contestants, culminating in the final lineup of six members, officially announced on November 17 at a live finale event in Los Angeles.
“The Debut: Dream Academy” is a blend of an audition program and competition that aired starting September 1, running for 12 weeks across platforms like YouTube, Weverse, and Abema TV. During this period, the 20 contestants underwent extensive training and participated in various singing and dancing challenges, judged by a panel of experts from both HYBE and Geffen Records, as well as fan votes. The series culminated in the finale, where the final members and the group’s name were unveiled.
The upcoming Netflix docuseries, set to launch next year, promises a more in-depth and behind-the-scenes exploration of the journey of these 20 original contestants and the formation of KATSEYE. Directed by Nadia Hallgren, known for her Emmy-nominated documentary about Michelle Obama, “Becoming,” this series is a joint production of HYBE, Interscope Films, and Boardwalk Pictures.
This Netflix project will provide a rare glimpse into the intricate process of building a global music group, highlighting the challenges, triumphs, and intense dedication required to make it in the highly competitive world of music.
