Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming crime thriller “Mea Culpa,” a film written and directed by the honorary Oscar winner, Tyler Perry, known for works like “A Jazzman’s Blues.” The movie is set to premiere on the streaming platform on February 23rd.
Starring Kelly Rowland, known for her role in “Think Like A Man,” and Trevante Rhodes, famous for his performance in “Moonlight,” “Mea Culpa” revolves around the story of Mea Harper (played by Kelly Rowland), a criminal defense attorney who takes on the challenging murder case of Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), an artist accused of killing his girlfriend. As Mea delves into the case, she grapples with the enigmatic and seductive nature of her client while trying to determine his innocence, leading her into a world that is both enticing and perilous.
The film is produced not only by Tyler Perry but also by Dianne Ashford, Will Areu, Angi Bones, and Kelly Rowland herself. The ensemble cast includes Sean Sagar, Nick Sagar, RonReaco Lee, and Shannon Thornton, adding depth to the thrilling narrative.
“Mea Culpa” marks Tyler Perry’s fifth collaboration with Netflix, following his previous works such as “Six Triple Eight,” “A Fall from Grace,” “A Madea Homecoming,” “A Jazzman’s Blues,” and Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up,” in which he had an ensemble role. “Six Triple Eight,” a drama yet to be released, recounts the true story of the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color stationed overseas during World War II, with Kerry Washington leading the cast and serving as an executive producer.
Tyler Perry’s partnership with Netflix was solidified after the announcement of “Mea Culpa” last year, with Netflix committing to a multi-year first-look deal. This deal entails Perry’s involvement in writing, directing, and producing more feature films exclusively for the streaming platform. It followed Perry’s prior agreement with Amazon Studios in November 2022, in which he committed to writing, directing, and producing four films for Amazon Prime Video.
