David Lynch, renowned for his enigmatic films that delve into the depths of the subconscious, has brought his distinctive vision to the 62nd edition of the Salone del Mobile Milano. Through his immersive installation titled “Interiors by David Lynch: A Thinking Room,” visitors are invited to undertake a journey of self-reflection and connection with space, others, and the self.
The exhibition features two identical yet imaginatively conceived rooms, serving as symbolic gates that must be entered to fully immerse oneself in the experience. Lynch’s narrative explores the production of interiors and their impact on shaping human experiences within them.
Drawing upon the language of film and theater, the installation comprises empty rooms adorned with a central armchair equipped for writing, drawing, and painting. Seven cylinders connect the chair to the ceiling, while selected images curated by Lynch adorn the walls, evoking a sense of intrigue and contemplation. A mirror, a clock, and an undulating curtain further enhance the atmosphere. Despite their apparent emptiness, Lynch infuses the rooms with elements of blue, gold, light, and silence, creating an ambiance of introspection. Visitors are encouraged to experience these spaces in solitude, preparing themselves for the dynamic atmosphere of the Salone del Mobile with a heightened sense of consciousness and receptivity.
Antonio Monda, curator of the project, emphasizes Lynch’s belief that true art poses questions rather than providing answers. In Lynch’s world, every interior is imbued with vitality, becoming a character waiting to be interpreted by the viewer. The Thinking Rooms serve as antechambers, inviting visitors to reflect on their impulses, hopes, and fears before exploring the fair. Maria Porro, President of the Salone del Mobile, praises Lynch’s ability to stimulate multiple senses and provoke sensory overload in his installations.
Collaborating with the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, Lynch’s artistic vision is translated into a tangible reality, culminating in an evocative and immersive experience that challenges visitors to question, reflect, and connect with the spaces they inhabit.
A Thinking Rooms project exemplifies the transformative power of art and design, offering a sanctuary for introspection amidst the chaos of the world. Through Lynch’s visionary lens, visitors are invited to explore the boundaries of perception and unlock the mysteries of the subconscious.
