Balenciaga is once again pushing the boundaries with the launch of the Balenciaga Music | BFRND Series. This ambitious project, set for release on May 21st, 2024, marries high fashion, music, and digital gaming through a collaboration with the French composer and musician BFRND. Known for his genre-bending musical compositions that have accompanied every Balenciaga presentation since 2017, BFRND often blurs the lines between dark electronic sounds and classical music.
The collaboration is anchored around several key components, the main being the limited-edition merchandise and an original 4-hour playlist curated by BFRND himself. The merchandise includes stylish T-shirts and zip-up hoodies, each embedded with an NFC chip that provides exclusive access to a wealth of content, enhancing the consumer’s experience beyond the tactile. This innovative approach leverages technology to provide digital engagement to fashion but also gives interactivity and exclusivity to the apparel.
Adding a unique twist to the series is ‘BFRND: The Game’, an original 8-bit style video game that offers fans a nostalgic trip through various iconic Balenciaga show sets like Winter ’21 and Spring ’24. In this pixelated adventure, players guide a digital avatar of BFRND, navigating through intricately designed levels filled with obstacles and collectibles, all synchronized to the bespoke tracks produced for Balenciaga’s past fashion shows.
The game will be accessible via a dedicated mini-site, WeChat, and interactive touchscreens located at Balenciaga’s flagship stores in Paris Montaigne and Shanghai IAPM, with the first three levels available to all. A fourth bonus level can be accessed only through the NFC-enabled merchandise. Moreover, the launch of this series will be celebrated with a worldwide contest where the top 30 players of ‘BFRND: The Game’ will be rewarded.
