Sumner’s portrayal of Freddie Miles, directed by Steven Zaillian, redefines the character with a nuanced and sophisticated approach, bringing a fresh intensity to the role. Set against the backdrop of Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood, the series explores themes of envy, obsession, and fantasy, with Sumner’s performance adding a layer of quiet menace to the narrative.
In an interview with DSCENE Editor Katarina Doric, Sumner discusses the challenges and revelations encountered during filming, his personal connection to Italy, and the creative process that brought Freddie Miles to life. Reflecting on the audition process, Sumner shares, “I auditioned Freddie how I heard him in my head. I didn’t hear a loud American as he was described in the script. I decided to play him differently.” This bold choice earned the approval of both the casting director and director.
Sumner also opens up about the personal significance of filming in Rome: “Coming to Rome and staying in an apartment in Trastevere felt like the first time I had arrived anywhere and felt like home. I am a different animal in Italy.” The unique setting infused the production with a sense of homecoming, enriching Sumner’s performance.
