The Costume Institute‘s 2024 exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” promises to be a multisensory journey through the history of fashion at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Set to open on May 10 and run until September 2, the exhibition aims to revive the sensory dimensions of historical garments that are too delicate to be worn or even displayed on mannequins. This innovative approach uses a variety of technological and artistic methods to recreate the sights, sounds, smells, and textures associated with these garments, bringing them back to life for the audience.
Another innovative feature of the exhibition is the collaboration with the smell researcher and artist Sissel Tolaas. Utilizing her unique expertise, the exhibition will incorporate scents that evoke the original contexts of the garments, enhancing the visitor’s experience by adding a layer of history.

This year’s Met Gala, themed after the exhibition, draws inspiration from J.G. Ballard’s “The Garden of Time.” Reflecting on the ephemeral nature of fashion through the metaphor of nature and its cycles of rebirth and decay, this years Gala promises to be an evening where technology and high fashion come together.
This years co-chairs are Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, and Bad Bunny. Given their prominence, it’s likely that their significant others may also attend. While Tom Holland‘s presence is uncertain due to his acting commitments in London, Ben Affleck is expected to accompany Jennifer Lopez, continuing their tradition. Elsa Pataky could be seen alongside Chris Hemsworth, but it is yet to be confirmed.
Regular attendees such as Kim Kardashian, along with her sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner, are expected, maintaining their streak of memorable fashion moments. Rihanna, another Met Gala icon known for her show-stopping entrances, may also appear, potentially with A$AP Rocky, adding to the high-profile guest list. Despite rumors of a potential appearance by Taylor Swift, it appears she will not be attending this year.

The expected presence of fashion designers and icons, including Stella McCartney, Michael Kors, and potentially Donatella Versace, points to another night of fashion statements. The invitation of rising stars such as Lily Gladstone and Ayo Edebiri is a refreshing inclusion of new talent. Honorary co-chairs for the event are Jonathan Anderson, the creative director of Loewe, and Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok.
The 2024 Met Gala, as always, promises to be a memorable event, and fans worldwide won’t have to miss it thanks to the live coverage planned.
