In a culmination to Margaret Zhang‘s tenure as Editor-in-Chief, Vogue China Magazine‘s latest PhotoVOGUE issue features none other than Kim Kardashian, a symbol of enduring visibility in the age of the camera. Renowned for being one of the most photographed individuals worldwide, Kardashian shares her journey from childhood memories captured by her father’s video camera to her ubiquitous presence in media as an adult.
“My dad always had a video camera on us. I have archives – hours and hours of footage,” Kardashian reminisced with Zhang during her cover shoot. This lifelong exposure to the lens has shaped not only Kardashian’s comfort with being filmed but also her understanding of its value. “Just to have that footage, now looking back, is so special… but then going into [my] twenties and thirties and forties, always having cameras around, you just really get used to it,” she explained.
For this feature, Kim Kardashian embarked on a new artistic collaboration with Chinese photographer Huang Jiaqi. Known for his ability to capture raw, unfiltered emotions, Huang was tasked with creating an intimate photo essay that peels back the layers of Kardashian’s public persona to reveal a more personal narrative. In charge of art direction was Matt McDonald, with fashion direction from Vivienne Sun, and set design by Lisette Cocca and Dean. Beauty is work of hair stylist Evanie Frausto, makeup artist Raoul Alejandre, and manicurists Kim Truong and Brittney Boyce at Star Touch Agency.
