Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Creative Director of Dior Women’s Collections, has once again taken inspiration from the globe-trotting legacy of Christian Dior. For the Cruise 2025 collection, she has chosen the scenic gardens of Drummond Castle in Scotland, bringing together memories, inspirations, and suggestions to create an exceptional narrative. This collection follows in the footsteps of Monsieur Dior, who presented his work in Scotland back in 1955 at the Gleneagles Hotel. The result is a collection that celebrates the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of Scotland.
At the heart of this collection are the unicorn and the thistle, iconic symbols of Scotland, which are woven into heraldic embroidery. This embroidery not only showcases exceptional craftsmanship but also tells a story of tradition. The Millefleurs motif is given a new lease on life, transformed into these heraldic designs, recalling the historic emblem of Mary Stuart as described in Clare Hunter’s book, “Embroidering Her Truth: Mary, Queen of Scots and the Language of Power.”
The collection also features a map of Scotland, seen on various models and serving as a cartography of collaborations and cultural encounters. This is epitomized in the tribute to tartan, which Christian Dior once praised in “The Little Dictionary of Fashion” as a fabric that defies fashion trends. The collection blends tartan in various colors and styles, incorporating the historic cloth into kilts, dresses, and coats that traverse the spectrum from romanticism to punk.
Photographs from Dior’s spring-summer 1955 presentation are reimagined as prints and appliques, adding a cinematic montage effect to the collection. These historical images punctuate the Cruise 2025 collection with a sense of nostalgia and memory. The designs merge contrasting elements, such as the textures of velvet and lace, to dress the contemporary equestrian. Exaggeratedly wide sleeves on white shirts peek out from under dresses with gathered skirts and embroidered bustiers.
Tartan continues to be a central theme, reinterpreted in light materials and used throughout the collection. The Cruise 2025 line features dresses in varying lengths, coats, and capes with large hoods, and rain boots that come and go, reflecting Scotland’s unpredictable weather. Small jackets adopt menswear fabrics in gray, while the iconic Bar jacket is decorated with black velvet Brandenburg buttons, adding a touch of elegance to the collection.
Evening wear in this collection is a celebration of grandeur, with velvet magnifying the elegance of evening gowns. These gowns feature fitted busts and oversized skirts, while feathery woven fishnet transforms into long, lightweight dresses in nostalgic mauve hues. This inventive choreography of designs and materials offers a journey through time, revisiting stories of the past and transforming them into subjects of contemporary creativity.
