Rahul Mishra‘s Couture Fall 2024 collection, titled ‘Aura,’ delves into the and intricate concept of cosmic energy. Inspired by the Hindu god Brahma, known as Trikaldarshi or the seer of all time, the collection explores the idea of the universe as an extension of Brahma’s imagination. Brahma, depicted with four heads to symbolize his omnidirectional contemplation, represents the creator whose energy permeates the cosmos.
The ‘Aura‘ collection seeks to interpret this universal energy and its flow through couture fashion. Mishra draws on the concept that every individual has an aura, an electromagnetic field that connects them to the universe. This energy field, which persists before and after a living body’s existence, is portrayed through the collection’s intricate designs. Mishra’s exploration of this intangible concept leads to a deeper understanding of the ‘in-perceivable,’ where seeking knowledge often leads to more questions than answers.
Predominantly in black and greyscale, the collection captures the depth and mystery associated with the aura. The dark palette reflects the infinite possibilities of the unknown, much like staring into a black sky. According to Hindu philosophy, a living being, or jiva, is a combination of body, mind, and soul, all of which contribute to one’s aura. Mishra’s collection attempts to articulate how this energy interacts with a living body, using couture as a medium to express these ideas.
The collection also draws on Hindu mythology, where godly figures with phenomenal bodies and multiple heads symbolize their aura, strength, and characteristics. This symbolism is echoed in the designs, where the living body becomes a vessel for cosmic energy. The Bhagavad Gita, an ancient Indian scripture, describes the soul as an indestructible and everlasting entity that transcends time and space. This concept is beautifully integrated into the narrative of the ‘Aura‘ collection, reflecting the timeless nature of the soul.
Surfaces in the collection are adorned with rhinestones, sequins, glass beads, and intricate thread embroidery, showcasing Mishra’s commitment to detailed craftsmanship. Some silhouettes flow organically with the fabric, while others are constructed with metal structures formed in collaboration with local welding staff. This blend of traditional hand embroidery techniques, native to the Indian subcontinent, with innovative metalwork, exemplifies Mishra’s continuous exploration in fashion. The brand supports over 2000 fashion workers, including artisans, weavers, and tailors, highlighting its dedication to ethical production.
Each piece in the Rahul Mishra Couture collection is crafted in India with a global vision. Mishra’s integration of philosophical concepts into couture fashion elevates the collection, showcasing the power of imagination in interpreting complex ideas.
