The latest collection from AELIS, themed “History and High Technology,”combines the interplay of light and darkness to reflect on humanity’s impact on the planet. This season, AELIS takes an anti-gravitational approach through space archaeology, inspired by satellite images of the Sahara desert and pyramids. This vision is materialized by utilizing ultra-tech fabrics developed in collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), which are illuminated by golden and silver nanoparticles of precious metals.
The absence of light plays a crucial role in this collection. Sofia Crociani, the designer behind AELIS, received antique black velvet pieces from the Paris Opéra archives. These historical textiles were reimagined with contemporary flair, transforming treasures from the past into modern masterpieces. One standout piece is a dress from the 1950s, previously used by a contemporary artist in a one-night-only performance, now reworked to reflect its storied history.
A graphic, long-sleeved black velvet dress, reminiscent of John Singer Sargent‘s painting “Madame X,” is complemented by an asymmetrical tattoo necklace crafted from black micro crystal beads by Les Interessants. Another highlight is a Renaissance-inspired black velvet jacket adorned with fine gold and silver chains, creating a unique and luxurious piece.
The collection also juxtaposes antique lace and silver organza embroidery with eco-conscious mohair wool in a black and white Chantilly tank top dress. AELIS collaborated with Professor Kinor Jiang‘s team at PolyU to develop sustainable, high-tech fabrics. Using a magnetron sputtering coating, they applied ultra-thin metallic films of gold and silver onto organic silk organza without polluting the environment, resulting in ethereal, air-light fabrics that are both precious and eco-friendly.
The culmination of this high-tech, sustainable approach is evident in pieces like a pyramid-shaped silver organza dress and a cascading vintage black feather gold ball gown. An asymmetrical gold organza tunic, adorned with silk embroidery recovered from a treasured 1924 gown, further showcases the blend of historical reverence and modern innovation. The collection was presented in a stark, white gallery designed by Pierre Bénard, creating a timeless, “Kubrickian” atmosphere where contemporary design and Roman antiques coexisted under zenithal light.
AELIS’s commitment to an eco-conscious future is exemplified by their prestigious upcycling partnership with the Paris Opéra and the groundbreaking green technology collaboration with PolyU. This multicultural and joint effort highlights a visionary approach to fashion, aiming to reduce human impact on the planet while celebrating the confluence of history, technology, and sustainable innovation.
