Gaurav Gupta‘s Autumn Winter 2024 Couture Show, titled “Jyotirgamaya,” is a journey from darkness to light, rooted in Vedic philosophy and influenced by Egyptian mysticism. The Sanskrit term “Jyotirgamaya” reflects the spiritual transformation from unawareness to enlightenment, a theme that pervades the entire collection. Gupta’s narrative seamlessly integrates elements of futurism and surrealism, creating a transcendent experience for viewers.
The color palette of “Jyotirgamaya” is a deliberate representation of this journey. Moonstone Ivory symbolizes celestial light, providing an ethereal glow to the collection. Sand tones represent light and reflection, creating a subtle visual effect. Bordeaux, a rich and deep hue, adds layers of complexity akin to the unfolding of enlightenment. Black stands as the abyss from which illumination emerges, while metallic hues capture the transition into a realm of radiance. Monochrome pieces, harmonizing contrasts, signify the ultimate unity found in enlightenment. Each shade is carefully chosen to resonate with the theme of transitioning from shadow to inner light.
The collection features an array of corsetry, draping, and sculpting techniques. Highlights include cropped metal breastplate jackets, saree gowns, exaggerated mini dresses, and innovative trouser designs, such as Sharara trousers. The use of the ancient Aari embroidery technique, often incorporating Zari Zardosi embroidery with metallic threads, adds a touch of opulence and traditional craftsmanship to the designs. Gupta’s signature sculpting art meanders throughout the collection, adding a unique and recognizable touch to each piece.
