KENZO, a distinguished name under LVMH, announced its partnership with the French Judo Federation, bringing a special design that will bring together fashion and sportsmanship during the upcoming judo competitions in Paris.
This summer, KENZO’s Artistic Director, Nigo, has tailored a special outfit for the French Judo Team, drawing inspiration from the sport’s Japanese origins. The outfit is a Kimono-inspired suit, initially showcased at KENZO’s Fall Winter 2023 runway.
The Kimono, a significant cultural emblem in Japan, has evolved through the centuries since its inception in the 8th century. Having the characteristic to adapt across different ages, genders, and social statuses, especially during the Edo era, the Kimono remains a staple in significant Japanese cultural events. In judo, modifications to the Kimono have been made over the years to enhance freedom of movement and functionality, including adjustments in length and fabric thickness to aid athletes in performance.
KENZO Kimonos for the French Judo Team comes as a ceremonial yet functional garment. This creative expression follows Nigo’s consistent exploration of the ‘East-meets-West’ theme, a hallmark of his time at KENZO. As the summer competitions unfold, the French Athletes will don the KENZO Kimono suit during various official events.
