Why Demure & Mindful Fashion is Making a Comeback

How the Shift from Bratty to Demure is Shaping Our Fashion Choices This Fall

Fall is bringing a shift from the carefree chaos of summer to a more demure and mindful style. The ‘brat’ persona—defined by laid-back looks, smudged makeup, and a disregard for norms—is giving way to a trend focused on subtlety. This change is most apparent in the fashion world, where a preference for 90s inspired outfits is replacing the rebellious styles of recent months, a movement gaining traction on platforms like TikTok.

Social media has recently seen a surge of videos promoting a more understated approach to style, sparked by the “very demure, very mindful” trend. Originally intended as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on conventional ideas of femininity, this trend, popularized by content creator Jools Lebron, featured her showcasing simple, elegant workwear and subtle makeup. What started as a playful critique has since been taken seriously by some, who see the trend as a genuine call for demure behavior, linking it to the trad wife trend. On the other hand, the shift towards demure fashion aligns with a growing desire for well-crafted, quiet luxury that captures attention without being overly extravagant. This understated approach can be seen as a response to the saturated, fast-fashion market, with consumers increasingly prioritizing timeless, versatile pieces that offer longevity and a sense of personal style.

The Fall season is seeing a resurgence of classics. The styles associated with the demure trend reflect a refined take on ‘corpcore,’ blending the structured lines of office staples with with a laid-back, casual touch. This trend embodies a preference for simplicity and quality, giving rise to what some have dubbed the “underconsumption core.” This emerging trend champions minimalism and frugality, urging consumers to make thoughtful purchases and maximize the utility of their wardrobes. Such an approach aligns perfectly with the principles of demure fashion, emphasizing classic silhouettes and timeless pieces.

Monochromatic outfits, particularly in shades of black, are gaining attention this fall, inspired by minimalist fashion influencers like Brenda Weischer, also known as @brendahashtag. Her style, defined by sleek silhouettes and premium materials from brands like Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester, perfectly embodies the shift towards subtle elegance and thoughtful fashion choices. Meanwhile, fictional characters like Charlotte York from Sex and the City, portrayed by Kristin Davis, offer a cultural reference point for this trend. Charlotte’s preppy aesthetic, defined by elegance, with occasional playful touches, resonates with those seeking a polished yet approachable look.

Reflecting on these influences, the demure trend doesn’t just celebrate external appearances but also embraces a mindset of mindfulness and intentionality. It alludes back to style icons like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, whose minimalist approach defined the turn-of-the-century fashion landscape. Bessette-Kennedy’s preference for sleek, unembellished ensembles, combined with subtle accessories, set a standard for sophisticated simplicity that continues to inspire today’s fashion.

As the temperatures drop and the days shorten, the shift from brat to demure represents more than just a seasonal change; it reflects a broader cultural movement toward thoughtfulness, and timeless elegance. By adopting sophisticated minimalism and drawing inspiration from both classic and contemporary aesthetics, we hope this trend will encourage more conscious fashion choices. This fall, the focus on quality could lead to a more mindful approach to personal style, where less truly becomes more.
