The ALAIA Spring Summer 2025 collection unveiled a striking showcase during New York Fashion Week at the iconic Guggenheim Museum, where it brought together a potent blend of venue and vision. Themed around “American beauty,” the collection encapsulates freedom of the body and spirit, drawing from the simplicity and practicality of American sportswear with nods to icons like Adrian, Halston, Charles James, and Claire McCardell. This season’s choice of the Guggenheim’s iconic rotunda as the runway wasn’t just a backdrop but a dialogic space that intertwined the artistry of the museum with ALAIA’s fashion narrative. Mulier and the team have teased sneak peaks of the show, with a nod to their spectacular Guggenheim Museum location.
The designs by Pieter Mulier, rooted in the American dress vernacular—denims, T-shirts, and sports pieces—were elevated through ALAIA’s couture approach. Geometric shapes such as circles, squares, and fabric spirals wrapped the body in luxurious materials like double-face cashmere, fine knit, sculpted poplin, and silk taffeta, all devoid of zippers or buttons to emphasize a dynamic simplicity and an almost magical structural integrity. This minimalistic approach not only highlighted the collection’s sculptural attributes but also its commitment to blending tradition with modernity.
“This collection is about honoring tradition alongside modernity. It is a celebration of an American ideology of dress, and through that of a spirit that can unite New York and Paris – of the body in motion, liberated. As Alaïa always has been,” shares Pieter Mulier with the press talking about the Spring Summer 2025 collection.
In a move to bridge generations, ALAIA also invited students from leading American fashion schools—FIT, Parsons, and Pratt—to the show, offering them a firsthand look at this fusion of fashion and art. This season’s collection, therefore, not only honors past influences but also celebrates a spirit of unity between New York and Paris, focusing on the liberation of movement and the purity of form. The event at New York Fashion Week stood as a profound celebration of the ongoing dialogue between fashion and art, deeply rooted in an appreciation for cultural and aesthetic freedom.
