Human Mobile Devices (HMD), in collaboration with Mattel, has introduced a Barbie-themed flip phone, capitalizing on the nostalgic appeal of the iconic Barbie brand, made widely popular also by the last years movie, while offering a simpler, more focused mobile experience. The Barbie Flip Phone, created by Nokia manufacturer, is designed to evoke the classic Y2K aesthetic with its hot pink color scheme and flipping system reminiscent of the original Motorola Razr. However, unlike modern smartphones, this device is aimed at providing a digital detox, focusing primarily on basic functions such as calls and texts, and notably excluding social media apps.
The Barbie Flip Phone is marketed not just as a mobile device but also as a fashion accessory, coming with various themed items like a jewelry box, swappable front covers, a lanyard, and stickers, all in Barbie’s signature pink. Additionally, the phone includes fun features like glow-in-the-dark buttons and a special Malibu edition of the classic Snake game. It’s priced at approximately $129 and is set to appeal to both Barbie enthusiasts and those looking for a more straightforward, distraction-free mobile experience.

Developed by HMD, it features a 2.8-inch inner display, complemented by a 1.77-inch external clock display on its mirrored outer shell. The phone is equipped with a basic 0.3-megapixel camera with flash, following the y2k low quality photography trend. It supports up to 32GB of expandable storage via microSD card and comes with a 1450mAh battery. The U.S. version of the phone offers enhanced specs, including more RAM (512MB) and storage (4GB), running on the more capable KaiOS 3.1 operating system with a Qualcomm 215 chip, compared to the global model’s S30+ operating system.
HMD’s collaboration with Mattel adds to a growing trend of feature phones catering to users who wish to reduce their screen time. This partnership is a strategic move by HMD to blend nostalgia with modern needs, offering a stylish and practical alternative to the always-connected smartphone lifestyle. This approach has already seen success, as evidenced by the rising popularity of feature phones among younger generations who are actively seeking ways to manage their digital consumption.
The Barbie Flip Phone came to the UK on August 28th, and is expected to be available for pre-order in the U.S. by late September, with the first units shipping in October.
