For the KENZO Fall-Winter 2024 Women’s and Men’s Collection campaign, Artistic Director NIGO directs his focus toward Planet Earth, using space travel as a metaphor to explore cross-cultural exchange. Set against the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote, the campaign draws on both Eastern and Western influences, echoing the aesthetic of period and science fiction cinema. These natural settings serve as a visual bridge, connecting the everyday with the extraordinary.

Drawing inspiration from George Lucas’ use of samurai film influences in the creation of the Star Wars universe, the campaign imagery pays homage to the crafted and richly colored visuals of classic sci-fi. Photographed by Johnny Dufort and Frank Lebon, the volcanic terrains of El Volcancito, Charco de los Clicos, and Teseguite become the backdrop for portraits that highlight the diversity of humanity. These locations, marked by their unique geological features, transform into scenes that could easily belong to another world.
Complementing the still photography, a series of short films scored by Kazuki Ubukata’s i.e.h.a. depict the campaign’s stars traversing the rugged terrain of Lanzarote, resembling explorers on an alien planet. The interplay of light and shadow in these films enhances the narrative of interstellar exploration.
Central to the collection are pieces that blend traditional Japanese design with futuristic elements. A kimono coat takes on the silhouette of a warrior’s cape, while a weave inspired by a Japanese hakeshi baten fireman’s jacket adds a graphic touch that feels both historic and forward-looking. A plissé dress echoes the cloaks of space-faring heroines, further emphasizing the collection’s blend of the old and the new.
NIGO incorporates a variety of textures to bring the collection to life. Hand-spun materials, faux fur, and three-dimensional knits provide a sense of tactility, while metallic fabrics introduce a futuristic edge. The inclusion of a miniature dot pattern, drawn from the Edo Komon kimonos of fifteenth-century Japan, reappears as a constellation motif, connecting the ancient past with imagined futures.
