Off-White™ Spring Summer 25 collection, “DUTY FREE,” takes its name from the crossroads of two places: America and Africa. The collection pulls from the memories of Virgil Abloh’s Ghanaian heritage and Sierra Leonean-born designer Ibrahim Kamara’s personal journey. The title reflects the notion of movement across borders, both physical and emotional, and cultural exchange that informs the collection’s narrative. By integrating athletic elements with sharp, architectural cuts, the collection draws from Kamara’s childhood reflections on New York as a symbol of opportunity and a utopian dreamland, a place where possibilities felt within reach for Africans.
Womenswear in this collection features a strong, vertical silhouette that embraces the body through wrapping techniques and architectural design. Kamara’s attention to detail is evident in the use of hand-painted elements and embroideries, bringing a tactile sense of energy to the garments. These decorations evoke a sense of movement, following the collection’s travel themes. Transparencies add a provocative element to the tailored pieces, while maintaining a strong, functional edge. This collection presents women who embody strength, sensuality, and determination.
For men, the utilitarian feel is central to the design, with garments constructed to be functional and visually striking. Kamara introduces modularity through strategically placed zippers, allowing the wearer to adapt pieces to their needs. Shredded denim, angular layers, and quilting bring texture to the forefront. Mesh and embroidery inject a playful energy into the pieces, evoking a sense of multicultural collaboration. The addition of embroidered sports numbers ties in athletic themes, presenting a vision of modern masculinity that is both practical and commanding.
Collaboration with Ghanaian contemporary artist Nana Danso adds another layer to the collection’s storytelling. Danso’s reinterpretation of Off-White’s iconic arrows motif, combined with symbols drawn from African cultural references, gives the collection with a sense of identity and connection. These artistic elements reflect the themes of travel and discovery that run through the collection.
