In a surprising turn, Adidas and Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) have reached an out-of-court settlement that concludes all legal claims connected to the company’s controversial decision to end their partnership. Announced by Bjorn Gulden, Adidas’ CEO, the resolution brings closure to one of the most contentious splits in recent fashion and sportswear history.
“Both parties said we don’t need to fight anymore and withdrew all the claims,” Gulden revealed during a recent call with journalists. He emphasized that no financial compensation was part of the agreement, adding, “No one owes anybody anything anymore. So whatever was is history.”
The high-profile breakup occurred in 2022, following Ye’s public antisemitic remarks and erratic behavior, which forced Adidas to sever its collaboration with the rapper. The Yeezy line had been a significant pillar of Adidas’ success, accounting for nearly half of the company’s profits before the fallout. However, ending the partnership left Adidas with a staggering $1.3 billion worth of unsold Yeezy merchandise.
Since then, the company has been methodically selling off the remaining Yeezy inventory, with plans to complete the process by the end of 2024. The gradual sell-off has been part of Adidas’ strategy to recover from the partnership’s collapse without compromising its current business momentum.
The settlement marks a new chapter for Adidas as the company embarks on a revival plan under Gulden’s leadership. The third-quarter results signal promising growth across multiple regions, reinforcing the company’s optimism about its future. Recent reports indicate retro sneaker demand is surging, prompting Adidas to raise its annual profit forecast for the third time this year, with expectations now set at $1.3 billion—up from a previous estimate of $1.08 billion.
Despite the turbulence caused by the split, the settlement between Adidas and Ye signals a desire to move past their differences. However, the legacy of Yeezy’s impact on streetwear and fashion remains undeniable, leaving many to wonder what direction Ye will take next and how Adidas will continue its path forward, free from the shadow of the past collaboration.
