Queer is adapted from William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novel, set in 1940s Mexico City. The story follows American expatriate William Lee, played by Craig, as he becomes entangled in a surreal pursuit of a Navy serviceman named Eugene Allerton, portrayed by Starkey. Guadagnino’s distinct visual approach brings a dreamlike quality to the screenplay written by Justin Kuritzkes, who also penned Challengers.
Guadagnino described the film as “a very personal movie about the inescapable quest for being recognized in the gaze of another, through the lens of the great William Burroughs,” Variety reports. True to his artistic roots, the Academy Award-winning director continues to explore themes of queer identity and unconventional relationships with nuance and intimacy.
The film is set for a theatrical release in November. With a promising cast and Guadagnino’s signature storytelling, Queer is poised to be one of the year’s most talked-about releases. Watch the trailer now and stay tuned for further updates.
