The plot follows twin brothers Bill and Hal, who stumble upon an old mechanical monkey toy belonging to their late father while rummaging through their attic. Soon after discovering the eerie relic, they are confronted by a series of inexplicable deaths surrounding them. Attempting to escape the toy’s sinister influence, the brothers discard it and go their separate ways. However, the past refuses to stay buried, and when the deaths return years later, Bill and Hal are forced to reunite to face the dark curse head-on.
Produced by horror mastermind James Wan under his Atomic Monster banner, The Monkey features a dynamic cast that includes Christian Convery and Colin O’Brien as the younger versions of the brothers, alongside Rohan Campbell and Sarah Levy in pivotal roles. This marks another major horror project for Perkins and Neon, the distributor behind his previous feature Longlegs.
Production for the film began in Vancouver in February 2024, wrapping up just six weeks later in March. The project generated significant interest at the 2023 Cannes Film Market, where Black Bear Pictures announced its development and secured distribution rights. Initially attached to Searchlight Pictures, the adaptation eventually found its home with Neon, known for releasing boundary-pushing cinema.
This eerie tale of familial estrangement, supernatural dread, and haunted childhood objects is shaping up to be a must-watch. With Perkins’ knack for slow-burn horror, The Monkey aims to delve deep into psychological suspense while paying homage to Stephen King’s original short story.
The Monkey arrives in theaters on February 21, 2025. Fans can now get a glimpse of the film’s unsettling tone in the newly released trailer, setting the stage for a movie that lingers long after the credits roll.
