Spanish artist Jaime Hayon brings his distinctive creative vision to Miami Art Week with Bestial, a solo exhibition at Mindy Solomon Gallery that explores a new facet of his work. Known for his vibrant, eclectic style, Hayon’s exhibition dives into large-scale paintings and sculptures, revealing a twenty-five-year journey of artistic experimentation. In Bestial, Hayon invites viewers into a fantastical universe populated by hyperbolic, imaginative creatures. Through this alternate reality, he explores themes of nature, humanity, and the interplay between the two. His work, characterized by strange forms and playful symbolism, is a fusion of materials and techniques that reflect his multicultural influences. Among the highlights are three hand-blown glass busts crafted in collaboration with Murano artisans, where Hayon’s signature brushstrokes are translated into translucent, otherworldly faces, blending traditional glasswork with contemporary art.
Hayon describes Bestial as a journey into humanity’s untamed spirit. “Each creature I’ve crafted is a piece of that raw, untamed spirit within us, connected to nature and brimming with curiosity,” Hayon explains. This theme is evident throughout the exhibition, as Hayon examines our animalistic instincts and our inherent connection to the natural world. His work pushes the boundaries of imagination, capturing the beauty and complexity of coexisting with nature in unexpected and emotive ways.
The exhibition’s centerpiece is Beast I, a life-sized portrait of surreal creatures that intertwine fauna and flora. With a wild application of brushstrokes and bursts of color, Hayon creates a scene teeming with life, where humanoid forms are both relatable and arrestingly strange. Another focal piece, Walking Punk Bird, is a towering cerulean fiberglass sculpture standing at 170 cm, showcasing Hayon’s ability to combine technical precision with unrestrained creativity. Through works like these, Bestial unveils a bestiary of imaginary beings, representing Hayon’s exploration of the spontaneity that fine art allows.
Anchoring the exhibition is The Castle of Transgressions, a monumental acrylic painting that acts as a window into Hayon’s dream-like dystopia. Spanning 250 x 180 cm, the painting is populated by gigantic creatures and ambiguous shadows, highlighting his unique symbolic language. With this exhibition, Hayon expands his creative reach, inviting audiences to journey with him through layers of imagination, craftsmanship, and raw expression.
