Aspen Mountain is welcoming an art exhibition titled “Heaven,” featuring the work of Los Angeles-based artist Alex Israel. This distinctive exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of Aspen One’s Art in Unexpected Places program, which integrates contemporary art into the resort in innovative ways. Located in the iconic Ruthie’s building at the base of Aspen Mountain, “Heaven” is transforming this familiar spot into an engaging art experience that delves into cultural memory, acts of resurrection, and the importance of place.

For this installation, Israel has transformed the interior into a radiant white space, showcasing over thirty life-size painted portraits of celebrities who have passed away since the inception of Instagram in 2010. The exhibition, open from February 15-23 and March 7-16, 2025, invites visitors to explore the connections between celebrity culture and collective memory in today’s digital age.

In addition to the exhibition itself, Israel’s artwork is featured on the Aspen Mountain 2024–2025 season lift ticket. The tickets are embellished with a skyscape and the phrase “Your ticket to Heaven” in a vibrant red script, cleverly reimagining the logo of the iconic 1980s Los Angeles store, Heaven, for a contemporary audience.

The exhibition is a part of a broader series of events, it includes performances by the Aspen Chamber Quartet and psychic readings within the thematic setting of “Heaven”. These events underscore the exhibition’s aim to create a space where art and community interact dynamically.

Alex Israel’s work is deeply intertwined with his Los Angeles background, often exploring themes related to Hollywood, popular media, and the cult of celebrity. His artistic practice includes notable collaborations with cultural figures and brands, such as Bret Easton Ellis and Louis Vuitton, and extends to his personal ventures like Freeway Eyewear and Infrathin Apparel.

By bringing “Heaven” to Aspen Mountain, the collaboration offers both skiers and art enthusiasts a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary art in a dynamic setting, making it a standout event of the winter season.
