Maison Alto introduces the ART 01 monochrome editions for 2025, refining its approach to watchmaking with a precise, stripped-down aesthetic. The arrival of Raphaël Abeillon as creative director marks a new chapter, building upon the identity of the ART 01 while sharpening its minimalist ethos. This year’s release takes the foundational model in two distinct directions: monochrome black and monochrome grey. Each version explores materiality and light.
Alto continues to develop its concept of watches as studies in light and form. The ART 01 monochrome editions eliminate superfluous details, reducing the design to its essential elements. The black and grey iterations explore contrast in its purest sense – one absorbing light, the other reflecting it. These pieces are defined by their material finishes, where every surface plays a role in shaping the overall experience.

Art 01 Monochrome Black: A Luminous Void
Monochrome black takes an all-encompassing approach to black as a material rather than a color. The titanium case features a DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating that enhances its depth while maintaining a smooth, satin-like quality. A matching brass dial and black metallized sapphire crystal reinforce the cohesion of the design, with only the Super-LumiNova hands providing a subtle contrast. Light interacts with the surfaces in a controlled way, creating an effect where black is neither static nor absent, but an active presence.

Art 01 Monochrome Grey: Titanium as Expression
Monochrome grey places the focus on titanium itself, allowing the material’s natural properties to define the watch. The microblasted titanium case sets the tone, offering a textured surface that reacts dynamically to shifts in lighting. A matching grey dial and rubber strap complete the composition, each element refined to maintain visual unity. Achieving balance between these finishes required extensive testing, as Abeillon notes, ensuring that the watch captures the interplay between structure and reflection.

The Dial: A Dimensional Approach
The ART 01 series has continuously challenged conventional watch dial designs, incorporating depth and sculptural elements. The monochrome editions refine this approach, using shadow and relief to shape the display rather than relying on added ornamentation. Each surface catches and redirects light, making the dial appear in constant motion. This interaction ensures that time remains both visible and dynamic without disrupting the purity of the form.

Titanium and Time: Precision in Motion
Titanium’s qualities extend beyond weight reduction, influencing how the watch exists in space. At just 56 grams, the ART 01 monochrome editions achieve a balance of presence and lightness, where each angle reveals subtle shifts in tone. The deep black and muted grey take on new dimensions depending on the viewing perspective, reinforcing Alto’s focus on materiality. These watches rely on structure and finish to create their impact, demonstrating a vision where form dictates function with no unnecessary additions.
By deconstructing the ART 01 into its monochrome extremes, Alto presents a study in contrasts – black and grey, absorption and reflection, simplicity and complexity. The monochrome editions refine an already distinctive design, offering a precise exploration of material, light, and time.
