At the spring summer 2014 show Prada did not only introduce a new collection, it also shared with the world In the Heart of the Multitude art project. The walls of label's famed show space at Via Fogazzaro in Milan were clad by work of muralists Miles “El Mac” Gregor, Mesa, Gabriel Specter, and Stinkfish, and illustrators Jeanne Detallante and Pierre Mornet. That artwork is masterfully celebrating themes of femininity, representation, power, and multiplicity. Teaming up with the New York Based design firm and a long time creative collaborator, Prada has enlisted these six young and talented artists and illustrators to create this showstopping work.
The audience at yesterday's runway show was placed in a somewhat nontraditional fashion show space. Sitting on levels of a irregularly shaped central island, the audience engaged with the murals in front of them and at the same time in a street style manner would discover the new clothes on the models passing by.
“The fascinating aspect of this project was not only identifying and working with each individual, but imagining the work of all six together in conversation. In many ways this project contradicts the prevailing cultural condition where everyone is somewhere else, connecting through social media, emailing files, and talking by Skype. By insisting on real paintings instead of digital reproductions, Miuccia Prada is fostering the creative energy that can only happen when everyone is physically working together in one space. It’s a fundamentally different experience.” – from 2×4 founder Michael Rock
