Hi Melanie, nice to have you at DSCENE! Can you tell us a bit more about yourself?
Hey I love the magazine thank you! I was born in the UK and I trained to be an actress in London. I got one of my first jobs in America, fell in love with the place and have lived here ever since.
What inspired you to pursue acting?
As a kid I was always making up plays, singing and dancing, but was also very shy. Acting took me out of my comfort zone and I leaned into it.
When a role is right for you everything seems to slot into place
Can you remember your first casting, what was it like?
I can! I booked a job on a show called Strike Back. We filmed in Cape Town for two months and it was a dream. When a role is right for you everything seems to slot into place… Still can’t believe that was my first job!
Did you always dream of becoming an actress?
No. I danced a lot as a kid, then I was an art student and studied fashion at college. I’ve always enjoyed being creative!
You starred in Power Book II: Ghost first season. Can you tell us how it has been working with legends like Mary J. Blige, 50 cent, Method Man & more?
We have a big cast and we’re all like family. It’s amazing to be able to work with Mary and Method, they’re super supportive and passionate about everything they do, which makes set such a fun place.
The show has been renewed for a second season, what is next for Carrie?
Carrie’s gets sucked into everything this season. It’s interesting how she presents herself as elegant, in control and put together, but she’s also messy, ruthless and makes terrible decisions.
There are so many beautiful stories I’d like to act in, write and produce, and I’m passionate about all of them.
So, what is the role you enjoyed the most?
I enjoy complexities in characters and any role that challenges me.
What kind of roles are interesting to you?
So many, it feels like I’m just getting started. There are so many beautiful stories I’d like to act in, write and produce, and I’m passionate about all of them.
Finally, what are some of the recent movies you really liked?
Loved Nomadland and Judas and the Black Messiah. The actors did such beautiful and inspiring work.
