The Gaurav Gupta Spring Summer 2024 Couture Collection, titled “Aarohanam,” draws inspiration from the Sanskrit word meaning ascension. This concept holds deep spiritual significance, marking the journey from the gross to the subtle, from solidity to sublimity, from darkness to light. The collection embodies this transformation, portraying an elevation from reason to innocence and the shedding of constructs to unite with the natural design of existence.
This theme is akin to the movement of a snake shedding its old skin to emerge anew, reborn. It reflects the concept of kundalini – the coiled snake that rests dormant at the base of the spine until awakened by deep meditation and intent. This awakening lifts the curtain of illusion, opens the chakras, and ignites the flame of enlightenment.
The color palette is carefully derived from the observation of a flame. Black represents the absolute nothingness of being; Agni orange reflects the rising of a flame; sand symbolizes light and reflection; and ether blue indicates the infinity that ascension brings.
Silhouettes in the collection play with volume, capturing the flickering dance of a flame as it rises to dissolve into limitless space. The designs include cropped jackets, exaggerated capes, fluid trench coats, and sculpted metal structures, painting a surrealistic picture reminiscent of the ancient Indian Vedas. Fabrics such as chiffon, woolen suitings, and tailored textiles are enriched with indigenous techniques like Badla, Mukaish, and Zardozi, accentuated with multi-dimensional crystals that greet luminescence. Gaurav Gupta’s signature sculpting art is a prominent feature throughout the collection.
