For Fall Winter 2024, Ferragamo, under the creative direction of Maximilian Davis, revisits the 1920s, a decade known for liberation and self-expression. Davis searches for the core of this era, marrying it with his own perspective and the rich heritage of Ferragamo. The collection is a contemporary homage to the era’s emancipated identities, characterized by raised hems, fluid fabrics, dropped waists, and relaxed cuts. Davis articulates this inspiration by noting the 1920s’ use of clothing as a medium to celebrate freedom.
The Fall Winter 2024 lineup blends hyper-feminine transparencies, feathered finishes, and sequinned embroideries with masculine silhouettes reminiscent of icons like Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo. The collection employs broad shoulders, heavy wools, and supple leathers, balancing sharp, sculptural tailoring with surrealistic proportions inspired by rayograph portraiture. Blanket capes, a Ferragamo archive staple, symbolize protection and concealment, recalling the secretive ambiance of speakeasies where individuals hid their avant-garde looks until they reached the safety of these hidden spaces.
Protection rises as a central theme of the collection, with references to the period’s uniforms and the utilitarian workwear of fishermen. These influences are reimagined with a certain ease, utilizing wool mixed with cashmere and unlined leathers that soften the utilitarian forms while giving the pieces a fetishistic allure.
Footwear within the collection also echoes the 1920s through details like the sweetheart shape of a satin pump, an elegant T-bar atop a stiletto, and a strappy sandal drawn from the Ferragamo archive. Davis’s philosophy of simplification transforms traditional brogue detailing and monk-strap buckles into sleek cigarette-heel mules, while men’s shoes, like the elongated derby and contemporary utilitarian booties, offer a modern reinterpretation of vintage silhouettes.
The accessories line for Ferragamo Fall Winter 2024 introduces new iterations of the iconic Hug bag, alongside the introduction of a handbag design inspired by the lily, the symbol of Ferragamo’s home city of Florence. With features like feathered textures, grained leathers, and the new Ferragamo monogram, the collection shows the brand’s craftsmanship, notably in the application of 950 laminated leather sequins for a mermaid scale effect.
