MSCHF Global Supply Chain Telephone handbag is an innovative exploration into the collective creativity and unseen labor within the global manufacturing process. This unique project tasked factories across four countries with sequentially transforming a handbag by integrating elements from four iconic fashion brands: Hermès, Celine, Dior, and Balenciaga. Beginning with a directive to replicate a Birkin bag, each factory was given “vague, incomplete, and ‘bad’ instructions,” purposefully designed to relinquish control and emphasize the creative problem-solving skills of the factory workers.
The journey of the handbag—from Peru, Portugal, India, to finally China—resulted in a leather accessory that is not merely a fusion of designs but critical thinking as well. The finished product features leather material with a twill interior, detachable shoulder strap, and various compartments. By allowing each factory to interpret and merge the iconic styles of Hermès, Dior, Balenciaga, and Celine, MSCHF showcases the hidden artistry within the supply chain.
With the Global Supply Chain Telephone, MSCHF also initiates a conversation about the value of creative labor in manufacturing. This project serves as a reminder that behind every product, there is a network of skilled individuals whose contributions are crucial yet often overlooked. Priced at 650 USD, the handbag is released on February 21st, 2024.
