Disney+ has just unveiled the trailer for its highly anticipated original series, “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld,” set to premiere exclusively on the platform starting June 7. This dramatic portrayal explores the formative years of one of fashion’s most iconic figures, Karl Lagerfeld, portrayed by Daniel Brühl, in a narrative enriched with the flair and spirit of 1970s Paris.
The series, a product of collaboration between Gaumont and Jour Premier, travels back to 1972 when Lagerfeld was a 38-year-old ready-to-wear designer yet to embrace his iconic persona complete with his signature hairstyle. At this juncture in his life, Lagerfeld meets and falls passionately in love with Jacques de Bascher, played by Théodore Pellerin, a young and ambitious dandy whose presence adds intrigue and complexity to Lagerfeld’s life. The storyline deepens as it explores Lagerfeld’s rivalry with another titan of the fashion world, Yves Saint Laurent, portrayed by Arnaud Valois, who is depicted as a genius of haute couture, alongside his formidable partner, Pierre Bergé, played by Alex Lutz.
“Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” promises to transport audiences into the opulent locales of Paris, Monaco, and Rome, illustrating the glamorous yet tumultuous path Lagerfeld navigated on his rise to become the ‘Emperor of Fashion‘. The narrative goes beyond the glitz of grandiose parties and ego clashes, exploring the passions and betrayals that marked the early days of Lagerfeld’s career.
This series marks the first time Lagerfeld’s story is adapted for the screen, based on the bestselling book “Kaiser Karl” by Raphaëlle Bacqué. The star-studded cast also includes Agnès Jaoui as Gabrielle Aghion, the founder of Chloé, who played a significant role in Lagerfeld’s rise to fame. The direction of the series is split, with Jérôme Salle overseeing episodes 1, 2, and 6, while Audrey Estrougo takes on episodes 3, 4, and 5.
Cultural and fashion icons from Lagerfeld’s era also make appearances, enriching the authentic portrayal of that transformative time. Jeanne Damas steps into the shoes of Paloma Picasso, with Claire Laffut portraying Loulou de La Falaise and Sunnyi Melles as Marlene Dietrich. Paul Spera brings Andy Warhol to life, contributing to the rich array of personalities that influenced and interacted with Lagerfeld.
The music for the series is composed by Evgueni and Sacha Galperine, known for their work on critically acclaimed films and series. “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” is a biographical account and a celebration of a rich period in fashion history, brought to vivid life through the efforts of a talented ensemble cast and creative team.
