HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE part of the Fall Winter 2024/25 Collection is developed through a “Creative Session” with designer and artist Ronan Bouroullec, and was presented at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. This collaboration explores the relationship between creative concepts and their realization in clothing. It is about the integration of artistic visuals into the design process, rather than just using it aestheticlly.
A “Creative Session” with Ronan Bouroullec is a collaboration in which the brand’s design team works intimately with Bouroullec’s drawings. These drawings are not merely appreciated as art but are treated as a vast array of materials to be explored and played with. Bouroullec’s deep understanding of HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE’s design, combined with meaningful exchanges with the design team, has resulted in a collection that reflects a shared vision.
One of the standout features of this collection is the RB_DRAWING PLEATS. This design incorporates Ronan Bouroullec’s drawings into the brand’s signature pleated fabric. It explores the relationship between the original artwork and the garment by translating the white space in the artwork into the form of the pleats. The shading of the pleats enhances the vivid, deep colors and delicate brushwork of Bouroullec’s paintings, creating a dynamic and visually striking effect.
The RB_DRAWING COAT is another highlight of the collection, featuring Bouroullec’s signature paintings represented on light polyester fabric. This design utilizes silkscreen printing with multiple separate plates for each color, maintaining the depth and subtlety of the original artwork. The coat and poncho styles are designed in a simplistic manner to allow the liveliness and complexity of the artwork to shine through.
The RB_DRAWING PRESS SHIRT introduces a playful element to the collection. These shirts are made through a process of pressurizing and heating with a press machine. The shirt is folded before the heat-transfer sheet of the drawing is placed, resulting in a unique placement of the artwork on each piece, allowing for a spontaneous and creative interpretation of Bouroullec’s drawings.
Ronan Bouroullec, born in Quimper, Brittany, has established himself as a designer over more than two decades. His collaboration with HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE is one of his many design practices, spanning furniture, lighting, urban spaces, architecture, and installations.
