Artist and cultural icon Takashi Murakami has officially launched Ohana Hatake, an independent footwear brand that merges Japanese heritage, Murakami’s iconic artistic motifs, and innovative footwear design. Ohana Hatake, which translates to “field of flowers,” offers a fresh perspective on footwear, bringing Murakami’s artistic legacy to life through unique, original silhouettes.
SHOES
The brand has generated intrigue all year with teasers and limited releases on Complex Shop, including the Ohana Full-Bloom shoe—a whimsical design crafted from durable EVA foam and featuring Murakami’s globally recognized flower motif. Now, Ohana Hatake debuts with two distinct models: the Ohana Full-Bloom and the newly introduced Surippa Ohana, inspired by traditional Japanese house slippers and elevated with Murakami’s artwork etched into the sole.
Reflecting on the brand’s inspiration, Murakami shared that the name Ohana Hatake was influenced by the flower motif in the Japanese manga series, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. “The flower motif has always been a symbol of emotion for me,” Murakami explained. “In Frieren, there is a spell that creates a field of flowers, symbolizing a seemingly small yet powerful impact. Watching this scene, I felt deeply gratified by my lifelong dedication to the flower motif in my art.”
A collaboration with footwear innovators VIOLET ST, Ohana Hatake combines Murakami’s imaginative style with top-tier craftsmanship and functionality. “My work has always sought to explore happiness through creativity,” Murakami noted, referencing his broader cultural exploration. “Ohana Hatake lets me explore the intricate relationship between Japanese and American cultures. I hope those who wear these shoes can feel the joy and uniqueness of this creation.”
The highly sought-after Ohana Full-Bloom is available in two new colors, Apricot and Raspberry Rose, which are released through a raffle on ohanahatake.com. Ohana Hatake will make an in-person debut at ComplexCon Las Vegas, November 16-17, with exclusive colorways of Ohana Full-Bloom and an early release of the Surippa Ohana in Rust—a color that pays tribute to Murakami’s KaiKai Kiki studio team.
Ohana Hatake’s limited-release models are accessible on ohanahatake.com, with a global retail expansion set for 2025.
