Nike reintroduces the Air Superfly, 25 years after its debut, with a redesigned silhouette that builds on its original identity as a racing trainer. First launched as a low-profile shoe for athletes, the updated version maintains its minimalist aesthetic while incorporating innovative materials and functional upgrades, offering a refined take on its iconic design.
The revamped Air Superfly stays true to its origins, maintaining the deconstructed aesthetic that made it iconic in the early 2000s. The updated design features a reverse seam construction, eliminating the need for a traditional sock liner. This creates a smoother, lightweight feel while ensuring all-day comfort. Additionally, perforated medial and lateral quarter panels enhance breathability, mirroring elements of the original design. A nod to its heritage, the outsole retains distinctive green dots reminiscent of track spike placements from the early 2000s.
At its core, the new Air Superfly is engineered for performance and lifestyle wear. The shoe incorporates a hidden Nike Air unit paired with a Cushlon foam midsole, delivering superior cushioning and support. This combination ensures a responsive feel, ideal for everyday movement. The low-to-the-ground profile enhances stability, while the lightweight build reinforces the shoe’s running-inspired DNA.
The launch edition of the Air Superfly showcases a metallic silver colorway, drawing inspiration from the original silver anthracite palette. Crafted with a mix of leather and synthetic suede, the upper exudes a premium look and feel. This chameleon-like quality of the shoe, as noted by Nike’s Director of Footwear Product Creation, Thomasin Hummerstone, allows for versatility in design. Future iterations are expected to experiment with varying color and material combinations, ensuring the Air Superfly remains a dynamic option in Nike’s women’s lineup.
The reimagined Air Superfly was first seen on Nike athlete Sha’Carri Richardson during November’s SNKRS Showcase, emphasizing its roots in athletic performance. Richardson’s presentation of the shoe also highlighted its updated design, bridging Nike’s legacy of innovation with contemporary relevance.
The Nike Air Superfly will be available starting January 28 at select retail partners, with a broader global release on February 7 via SNKRS.
