For the FW25 season, Charaf Tajer of Casablanca introduces a collection that encapsulates the rich culture of Japan, exploring its varied layers through a modern lens. Rooted in Tajer’s two decades of experiences in Japan, observing its interplay of tradition and modernity, this collection, his second inspired by the country, ventures into the cultural dualities that define Japanese society. From the youth-driven countercultures to the rigid structures of corporate Japan, each piece reflects a unique narrative of cultural fusion and exchange.

Casablanca’s portrayal of Japan is decidedly contemporary, celebrating the dynamic creativity of its youth and the iconic subcultures that shape its streets. The collection showcases a vibrant clash of elements: the rebellious embellishments of Bōsōzoku biker gangs meet the playfulness of Harajuku Kawaii, set against the backdrop of corporate uniforms and the exuberant styles of rave culture.

Central to the collection is the concept of ‘Kaizen’, the philosophy of continuous improvement, which informs both the design process and the final outputs. Industrial and subcultural motifs are skillfully integrated into the collection, as traditional Japanese costumes are reenvisioned into relaxed, tailored silhouettes suitable for both men and women. This melding of styles speaks to a deeper appreciation of Japan’s historical depth and its relentless stride towards the future.

The collection’s textures and colors are a canvas for this cultural dialogue. Neon rave influences merge with the refined aesthetics of traditional embroidery, transforming Bōsōzoku motifs into sleek leather jackets and incorporating street-inspired graphics into luxurious silk and wool garments. These elements are juxtaposed with Americana, highlighting the global influences that permeate Japanese culture. This fusion is most vividly expressed through the use of plushie mascots and sakura embellishments that decorate everything from handbags to evening wear.

Adding to the diversity, Casablanca introduces a capsule of skiwear inspired by Japan’s snowy mountain ranges. Collaborative pieces with Swiss ski brand Faction feature alongside garments that echo the wintry landscapes of the Japanese Alps, including the innovative ‘Montagne’ sneaker, designed to reflect the silhouette of Mount Fuji.

Casablanca FW25 collection is an exploration of cultural identity. It stands as an example of the beauty of Japan’s contrasts and contradictions, seen through the eyes of a designer who acts both as an insider and a respectful visitor.
