Stone Island and New Balance continue their ongoing collaboration with a new interpretation of the Made in USA 998, set to release on March 27. This marks the first time the two brands have reworked the classic silhouette, infusing it with Stone Island’s signature materials and experimental design ethos. The sneaker, known for its performance-driven ABZORB cushioning, now takes on a military-inspired aesthetic rooted in Stone Island’s rich textile heritage.

Originally introduced in 1993, the New Balance 998 was the first model to feature ABZORB cushioning, setting a precedent for comfort and impact absorption. For this latest iteration, Stone Island draws from its iconic Raso Gommato fabric, a satin-weave cotton with a polyurethane coating first developed by Massimo Osti in 1984. This material, known for its durability and unique texture, has long been a staple in the brand’s outerwear and now makes its way onto footwear, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to innovation.

The sneaker’s upper is crafted from a Raso Gommato-inspired polyurethane-coated cotton canvas, delivering a structured yet flexible feel. Nubuck overlays provide added depth, while reflective accents, including the signature New Balance “N” logo, heel tab, and upper detailing, enhance visibility. The mauve, deep plum, and copper maroon colorway aligns with Stone Island’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection.

Beneath the surface, the ABZORB midsole ensures lasting comfort and support, a defining feature of the 998 since its inception. A translucent outsole adds an unexpected design twist, featuring the inscription “stone island product research” alongside debossed “new balance 998” branding at the heel. A woven Stone Island Compass logo patch on the nylon tongue cements the sneaker’s collaborative identity, tying it back to the Italian label’s legacy of technical craftsmanship.

The release strategy adds another layer of exclusivity to the drop. The Stone Island x New Balance 998 will be available only through select Stone Island stores and online, with priority access given to MyStoneIsland account holders. Sign-ups open on March 10 via the brand’s official website and WeChat store, offering dedicated fans a chance to secure their pair ahead of the general release. Pricing details have yet to be disclosed.
As the March 27 launch date approaches, anticipation continues to build, signaling another sought-after release in the ongoing partnership between these two industry heavyweights.
