The Fiberglass Shell Chair, first created in 1948 for a design competition, remains a benchmark of 20th-century furniture innovation. Revered for its fluid form and ergonomic fit, it was among the first to use molded fiberglass in mass-produced seating. MODERNICA, which continues to produce these chairs using traditional techniques at its Los Angeles factory, has now opened up this timeless silhouette to a new generation through its collaboration with BAPE®︎.

For this release, the Shell Chair comes in three variations: the upholstered Arm Shell Chair with supportive armrests, the upholstered Side Shell Chair, and a classic non-upholstered version. Each design uses BAPE®︎’s unmistakable ABC CAMO print in Green, Blue, or Pink, adding a graphic punch to the sculptural forms. The molded fiberglass seat is designed for long-lasting comfort, smoothly connecting with the armrests or side edges to cradle the body with style.

The signature Eiffel Base, named for its resemblance to the Parisian landmark, provides a lightweight yet durable foundation for each chair. Constructed with a wireframe design, it contrasts the visual density of the camo print with a clean architectural presence. The result is a design that feels equally at home in eclectic interiors and minimalist spaces, adding a layer of refined contrast.

Alongside the chair comes the Base Table, also referred to as the Aiko Table. Designed as a lightweight, multi-functional piece, the table features a round top made of 11 layers of laminated wood with a subtly beveled edge. With this collaboration, BAPE®︎ and MODERNICA bridge street culture and mid-century legacy, bringing a fresh visual language to two iconic design objects. The partnership highlights how familiar forms can be revitalized through unexpected creative perspectives, reaffirming the relevance of good design, and good print, in any era.
